"When I reviewed the compositions I had written for this record date, I realized that this project called for musicians as diversified as the music itself: players who could perform in many styles and modes; players who would bring something special to the music. I didn't want accompanists to play my work while I simply soloed. I wanted musicians who had strong identities of their own who would interpret the compsitions from a composer's perspective.
The group I selected turned out to be leaders in their own right, who while functioning as a cohesive unit, put their own unique signature to the music. Victor Lewis, it has been said, plays the drums as if they were a piano. Peter Madsen's extraordinary versatility and Peter Warren's warm tone and ultrasupportive concept as a bass player combined to make this all possible. I am deeply grateful to all of them."
